Cold room size estimator
Start from how much stock you hold at peak, not from a room size you have heard of. This estimate turns kilograms into cubic metres and a rough internal footprint.
kg
%
Share of the room actually filled with stock. 45–60% for shelved rooms with an aisle.
m
- Room volume
- 12 m³
- Internal floor area
- 5 m²
- Stock volume
- 6 m³
- Roughly
- 2.2 × 2.2 m
Assumes about 250 kg per m³ of loaded space for this product type. Refrigeration capacity (heat load) depends on ambient temperature, door openings and how warm stock arrives — ask for a heat-load calculation before buying.
How this is calculated
- Stored volume = peak stock (kg) ÷ typical storage density for the product type (kg per m³ of loaded space).
- Room volume = stored volume ÷ utilisation. Utilisation allows for aisles, air gaps around stock and space above the top shelf; 45–60% is typical for shelved rooms.
- Floor area = room volume ÷ usable internal height.
- Densities are rough planning figures; real packaging and racking change them. Heat load (the refrigeration capacity) is a separate calculation done by the supplier.
