Stabiliser size calculator

Compressors draw several times their running current for a moment at start-up. A stabiliser sized only on running watts can drop out or fail exactly when the compressor needs it most.

W

Rated input power from the spec plate.

0.8 is a common assumption for small compressors.

Allows for compressor starting current.

Suggested stabiliser
1.5 kVA
Running load
500 VA
With start-up allowance
1.5 kVA

Choose a stabiliser rated for refrigeration (with a time delay on restart). Confirm with the equipment maker and have an electrician check wiring and earthing.

How this is calculated

  1. Running VA = running power (W) ÷ power factor (0.8 is a common assumption for small compressors).
  2. Start-up allowance: compressors briefly draw several times running current. Stabilisers for refrigeration are usually rated with that surge in mind — check the stabiliser maker's refrigeration rating.
  3. Suggested rating = running VA × safety factor (we use 3 by default), rounded up to the next common size.
  4. This is an estimate. Follow the refrigeration maker's guidance where it differs, and have an electrician confirm wiring and earthing.
