Refrigeration for kirana and convenience store
A kirana or neighbourhood convenience store usually has a narrow frontage, no air-conditioning, a shutter open to the street from early morning to late night, and an owner who pays the electricity bill personally. Refrigeration here earns its place by selling milk, curd, paneer, cold drinks and ice cream that bring customers in several times a day. With so little floor space, the choice is usually between one or two visi coolers and a chest freezer, and the real questions are how much capacity fits, where the cabinet can stand without baking, and what happens when the power goes.
What the equipment has to cope with
- Floor space is tight, so a cabinet often ends up pushed against a wall or squeezed between shelves with no room for its condenser to breathe.
- An open shutter lets in street heat, dust and monsoon humidity all day, which raises running cost and clogs condensers quickly.
- Power cuts are common in many localities, and a small home-type inverter may not handle a compressor's starting current.
- Milk and curd crates often arrive before the shop opens and can sit outside in the heat before they reach the cooler.
- Brand-placed coolers usually come with rules on what can be stocked, so the owner may still need a cabinet of their own for dairy and other lines.
Typical temperatures
| Milk pouches, curd, buttermilk | +2 to +5 °C |
|---|---|
| Paneer, butter, cheese slices | +2 to +5 °C |
| Cold drinks, soda, packaged water | +2 to +8 °C |
| Ice cream cups, cones, sticks | −18 to −22 °C |
| Frozen parathas, peas, snacks | −18 °C or colder |
Equipment
What to buy, and why.
In most kiranas the best layout is a single- or double-door visi cooler near the counter, where the owner can see it and customers can reach it, plus a chest freezer for ice cream and frozen snacks. Keep both out of direct sun from the shutter and at least the specified gap from the wall. Use a dedicated socket for each, with a stabiliser if your area sees sags in the evening, and check with the inverter supplier that it is rated for a refrigeration compressor before relying on it. Clean the condenser grille regularly, because street dust settles there faster than in an enclosed shop.

Questions
- What size visi cooler suits a kirana store?
- Size it from what you sell on a busy summer day, not from the floor space alone. A store that sells mainly milk, curd and a few cold drinks may manage with one compact or single-door unit; a store that sells a wide range of beverages usually needs a double-door unit or a second cooler. Count the products you want on show and how many of each you sell before the next delivery.
- Can I run a visi cooler and freezer on an inverter?
- Sometimes, but check first. Refrigeration compressors draw a high current for a moment when they start, and a small inverter meant for lights and fans may trip or be damaged. Ask the inverter supplier to confirm the rating for the specific cooler and freezer. If backup is limited, keep the freezer lid closed during the cut; a full chest freezer holds cold well.
- Why does my cooler struggle in summer afternoons?
- Usually it is a mix of hot air from the street, sun on the glass, a dusty condenser and frequent door openings. Move it out of direct sun if you can, clean the condenser grille, keep the clearance behind it and avoid loading warm crates all at once. If it still cannot hold temperature, have a technician check it.
