Visi cooler buying guide: choosing a glass-door cooler for your shop

A visi cooler has two jobs: keep drinks and dairy cold, and sell them. The right one is sized to your fastest-moving stock, sits where customers see it and copes with a hot, humid shop front.

What a visi cooler is

'Visi cooler' is the common Indian name for an upright glass-door merchandiser — a refrigerator that displays bottled drinks, packaged dairy and desserts behind a glass door, usually lit from inside. Most hold a chilled band of roughly +2 °C to +10 °C; they are not freezers.

Size it in bottles, not litres

Litre ratings are hard to compare across brands. Ask how many of your most common SKU — 200 ml, 500 ml or 1-litre bottles, or cartons — fit per shelf, and how many shelves are adjustable. Then size for a weekend or festival day, since a cooler that runs empty at peak loses sales.

Single, double or sliding door

  • Single door: kiosks, cafés and small stores with limited frontage.
  • Double door: supermarkets and busy stores; more facings for more brands.
  • Sliding doors: useful where an aisle is too narrow for a swing door to open fully.

Glass and lighting

The glass door is where most heat gets in. Double-glazed or low-emissivity glass cuts heat gain and reduces condensation on the outside of the door — important in humid coastal cities, where a fogged door hides the product. Some units add heated door frames for the same reason.

LED lighting gives off far less heat than older fluorescent tubes, so the compressor works less and the product looks brighter.

Placement in the shop

  • Keep it out of direct sunlight — a sunlit glass door can overwhelm the cooling.
  • Leave the ventilation gap the manufacturer specifies, especially for top-mounted compressors near a low ceiling.
  • Put it where customers decide: near the counter or entrance, not in a back corner.
  • Give it a dedicated, earthed socket; ask whether your supply needs a stabiliser.

Top or bottom-mounted compressor

Bottom-mounted compressors are easy to reach for cleaning and raise the lowest shelf off the floor; top-mounted ones keep the compressor away from floor dust and mopping water but need headroom to breathe. Either works — what matters more is keeping the condenser clean and ventilated.

Running cost and service

A visi cooler runs around the clock, so small efficiency differences add up. Ask for the rated energy use per day and the room temperature it was measured at, and compare models on the same basis. Check who services the unit locally, and whether the warranty covers the compressor separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can a visi cooler store ice cream?
No. Visi coolers hold a chilled band above 0 °C. Ice cream needs a freezer — usually a glass-top or hard-top chest freezer, or an upright glass-door freezer.
Why does the glass door fog up?
Warm, humid shop air meets the cold glass and condenses. Double-glazed or heated-frame doors reduce it; so does keeping the door closed and the cooler out of direct airflow from the entrance.
