Ice Cream & Dairy
Refrigeration for beverage and fmcg distributor
Beverage, dairy and FMCG distributors often place visi coolers in kiranas, cafés and pharmacies so their products are sold cold and seen first. A placement programme is a fleet of small assets scattered across hundreds of outlets, each in a different shop with different power, heat and care. The cooler has to sell the brand, survive rough use and dust, run on the retailer's electricity without becoming a reason to switch it off, and be serviceable quickly when it fails. Choosing the right cooler and the right rules for placement matters as much as the number placed.
What the equipment has to cope with
- Retailers pay the electricity bill, so an inefficient or noisy cooler is often switched off at night or unplugged in a power-short area.
- Placed coolers often get filled with other brands' products, defeating the purpose of the placement.
- Coolers sit in hot, dusty, non-AC shops with unstable voltage, which shortens compressor life if not protected.
- A fleet spread across many outlets needs tracking, service routes and spare parts planned in advance.
- Branding has to stay readable and clean through years of use and monsoon humidity.

Equipment
What to buy, and why.
Most programmes standardise on a small number of cooler sizes: compact or countertop units for small kiranas and pharmacies, single-door coolers for typical outlets, and double-door coolers for high-volume stores. Each comes with the brand's canopy, a lock if needed and a record of serial number and outlet. Placement rules should cover distance from walls, sun and the shop entrance, a dedicated socket and, in areas with poor supply, a stabiliser. Brands with frozen lines add glass-top chest freezers on the same basis.

Questions
- What size visi cooler should a distributor place in a kirana?
- Match the cooler to the outlet's sales and space. A compact or countertop unit suits a small outlet with modest sales; a single-door cooler suits most kiranas; a double-door cooler is for high-volume stores. An oversized cooler half-filled with other brands helps no one.
- How do we stop retailers switching off placed coolers?
- Choose efficient coolers, keep them serviced so they do not run constantly, and agree placement terms with the retailer that cover operating hours. Placing the cooler away from sun and with clearance behind it reduces running cost, which is the main reason retailers switch off.
- How should a cooler programme handle servicing?
- Record each cooler's serial number and outlet, set a route for periodic condenser cleaning and checks, and agree a response process for failures. Dust and blocked condensers are the most common causes of poor cooling in placed coolers.
