Glass-Top Deep Freezer for Ice Cream and Frozen Food
A glass-top deep freezer is a chest freezer with sliding glass lids instead of a solid one. It holds frozen stock at −18 °C or colder while letting customers see and pick it themselves. It is the familiar ice-cream freezer in kirana stores, sweet shops and supermarkets, and it works equally well for frozen snacks, peas, parathas and meat. Glass lets in more heat than an insulated lid, so a glass-top works harder than a hard-top of the same size. It is the right choice when seeing the product is what sells it.
Best for
- Kirana stores, sweet shops and bakeries selling ice cream and frozen desserts.
- Supermarket frozen-food aisles with self-service frozen snacks and vegetables.
- Ice-cream and frozen-food brands placing branded freezers in retail outlets.
- Cinema, mall and canteen counters with impulse frozen treats.
Before you buy
- Fogging and frost: in humid weather, moisture condenses on the glass and frosts on the inside. Keep lids fully closed, avoid placing the freezer by an open door or AC draught, and clean the lid tracks so they seal well.
- Heat and sun: a glass lid in direct sunlight lets in a lot of heat and can soften ice cream at the top. Place it away from shop windows and the open shutter.
- Energy and power: a glass-top runs harder than a hard-top. Compare the BEE label where available, give it an earthed socket with voltage protection, and plan for power cuts.
- Stock rotation: customers reach for the top layer, and older stock sinks. Restock from below and use baskets, so nothing stays at the bottom until it is out of date.
- Lid and safety: sliding lids must run smoothly or customers leave them open. A lock helps after hours. Keep the glass clean so the product actually shows.
How it compares within the range
A hard-top deep freezer stores; a glass-top sells. The hard-top retains cold better, costs less to run and suits back-of-house bulk stock. The glass-top earns its higher running cost through self-service sales. An ultra-low temperature freezer is a different tool, for specialist stock that needs to stay far below normal frozen temperatures. Many retailers use both chest types: a glass-top on the shop floor for what is selling, and a hard-top in the back holding reserve stock.
Questions
- Why is there frost on the inside of my glass-top freezer lid?
- Humid shop air is getting in, usually because lids are left partly open, the tracks are dirty or the gaskets are worn. Clean the tracks, check the gaskets, and remind staff and customers to close the lid.
- Can a glass-top freezer be used for long-term storage?
- It can hold frozen stock safely, but it is less efficient and holds temperature less well through power cuts than a hard-top. Keep bulk reserve stock in a hard-top and display stock in the glass-top.
