The Bureau of Indian Standards runs product certification schemes. The best known is the ISI mark, licensed to manufacturers whose products meet the relevant Indian Standard, with factory assessment, sampling and testing. A separate Compulsory Registration Scheme covers many electronic and IT products: notified products must be tested at a BIS-recognised lab and carry the Standard Mark with a unique registration number.
Some products are compulsorily required to carry a BIS mark under government notifications or Quality Control Orders; for others it is voluntary. Requirements change over time and vary by product category and component, so buyers should ask the supplier which BIS certifications apply to the specific model and its key components, and check the licence or registration number. BIS offers a mobile app, BIS CARE, that can be used to check the authenticity of marks.
A hospital procurement team in Delhi preparing a tender might ask bidders to state which BIS certifications apply to each item, attach licence numbers, and confirm compliance with any Quality Control Orders relevant to the product.
