Night blinds for open multideck chillers: how they save energy

Open multideck chillers let shoppers grab dairy, beverages and ready meals without opening a door. The price of that convenience is an open front that constantly exchanges cold air with the shop. During trading hours that trade-off may be worth it. After closing, there is no reason to keep paying for it. Night blinds are a simple way to close the front of the cabinet when nobody is shopping, and they are one of the cheapest efficiency measures in retail refrigeration.

Why open cabinets lose so much cold

An open multideck holds temperature with an air curtain: a sheet of cold air blown from the top of the cabinet down to a return grille at the bottom. The curtain is never perfect. It mixes with warm store air at its edges, and that warm, humid air ends up in the evaporator as heat load and frost. In a store with fans, air-conditioning drafts or busy aisles the curtain is disturbed further.

In most open cabinets this infiltration is the largest single source of heat load, bigger than the heat that conducts through the insulated walls.

What a night blind does

A night blind is a roller screen, usually a woven or aluminised fabric, that pulls down across the open front and clips at the base. It does not need to be airtight. By blocking the open face it stops most of the mixing between store air and the air curtain, so the evaporator sees far less warm, moist air. Compressor run time falls, frost builds more slowly and product temperatures often become more stable overnight.

Using night blinds properly

  • Make lowering blinds part of the closing checklist, and raising them part of opening.
  • Clip the blind at the bottom so it does not billow and leave a gap.
  • Turn off or dim cabinet lights at the same time; lights add heat inside the cabinet.
  • Do not block the return air grille when restocking at night with the blind half open.
  • Check that temperatures overnight stay in range, using the cabinet display or a data logger.
  • Clean blinds regularly; dirty fabric in a food area is a hygiene issue.

Night blinds in Indian stores

In stores where the air conditioning is switched off after closing, the shop can warm up overnight, especially in summer. An open cabinet then fights a warmer, more humid room than it does in the day. Night blinds help most in exactly this situation. In monsoon months they also reduce the moisture reaching the coil, which cuts frost and the energy spent on defrost.

Where power cuts are common, a blind also slows the rise in product temperature during an outage after hours.

Measuring the saving in your own store

Savings from night blinds depend on how long the store is shut, how warm it gets overnight and how disturbed the air curtain is. The honest way to know is to measure. Meter one cabinet, or the refrigeration circuit, for a week without blinds and a week with blinds used every night, in similar weather. Compare average kWh per day and check overnight product temperatures from the same logger. The result tells you whether to fit blinds across every open cabinet.

When to go further than blinds

Blinds help only when the store is closed. If you are planning a new installation, consider whether glass doors on chilled cabinets are acceptable to your customers. Doors reduce infiltration around the clock, not just at night. Many retailers now use door-fitted cabinets for drinks and dairy and keep open cabinets only where fast grab-and-go access really matters.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fit night blinds to an existing open multideck?
Usually yes. Retrofit roller blinds are made in standard and custom widths. Measure the open face, check where the blind can be mounted without blocking air outlets, and confirm with the cabinet supplier that it will not disturb defrost.
Do night blinds help on serve-over deli and sushi counters?
Serve-over counters are usually closed to the customer side but open at the back for staff. A cover or blind on the staff side after hours, combined with lights off, cuts warm-air entry in the same way. Check with the supplier that air outlets are not blocked.
Do night blinds affect food safety?
Used correctly, they help keep product temperatures stable overnight. Always verify with temperature records that food stays within its required range.
