The Electronic Vaccine Intelligence Network was developed by India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, with implementation support from UNDP. It combines a mobile application, through which cold chain handlers record vaccine stock, receipts, issues and usage, with SIM-enabled temperature loggers fitted to cold chain equipment. Data goes to a cloud server, and programme managers see stock levels and temperature alerts on dashboards at district, state and national level.
Before digital tracking, stock and temperature records were largely on paper and reached managers late. Real-time visibility helps prevent stock-outs and overstocking, and temperature alerts let staff respond to equipment failures or power issues sooner. The approach later informed other digital health platforms in India.
At a district vaccine store in Uttar Pradesh, the cold chain handler records the day's issues to sub-centres on a phone, while the logger on each ice-lined refrigerator and freezer reports temperature. If an ILR drifts out of range, alerts reach the responsible officers.
