Comparison

Visi cooler vs Open multideck chiller

Both a visi cooler and an open multideck put chilled products in front of shoppers. A visi cooler is an upright cabinet with a glass door, usually plug-in. An open multideck has no door at all and relies on an air curtain to hold cold air on the shelves. Open decks make grabbing a product effortless; doors keep cold in. In a hot, humid Indian store without strong air-conditioning, that difference matters a lot.

Visi coolerOpen multideck chiller
How cold is heldA closed glass door traps cold air. Air only escapes when someone opens it.A curtain of cold air flows down the front. Any draught, fan or crowd disturbs it.
Energy useMuch lower per metre of display, since the door blocks most heat and moisture.Much higher. The case continuously fights warm, humid store air entering through the open front.
Store environmentLittle effect on the aisle. Plug-in units do reject heat from the condenser into the room.Spills cold air into the aisle, making it chilly while the case works harder.
Ambient sensitivityCopes with non-AC shops when rated for high ambient temperatures.Designed for air-conditioned stores. In hot, humid air it struggles to hold product temperature.
Shopper accessOne extra step: open the door. Fine for beverages and packaged dairy.Instant grab. Encourages browsing and impulse buys of fresh, prepared and grab-and-go items.
InstallationUsually plug-in. Place it, level it, connect to a 230 V socket.Larger units are often remote, needing piping to an outdoor condensing unit or a central rack.
Product rangeIdeal for drinks, dairy, packaged sweets and anything sealed.Suited to fruit, salads, sandwiches and dairy in high-footfall stores.
Night operationDoors stay closed after hours; nothing extra needed.Night blinds are strongly advised to cut losses when the store is closed.
Humidity effectsGlass can mist briefly after opening in monsoon months. Good door heaters or coated glass keep it clear.Moist air entering the case condenses and frosts on the coil, so defrosts are more frequent and product can sweat.

Choose visi cooler when…

  • Your shop is not fully air-conditioned or the AC is switched off at times.
  • You mainly sell beverages, packaged dairy and sealed products.
  • Electricity cost is a major concern and you want predictable ₹ bills.
  • You need a plug-in unit that can be moved, swapped or added without contractors.

Choose open multideck chiller when…

  • You run an air-conditioned supermarket with high footfall and fast-moving fresh products.
  • Impulse purchases of salads, fruit and ready meals are central to your format.
  • You already have, or are planning, a central refrigeration system with remote cases.
  • You can fit and use night blinds and keep the case away from doors, fans and AC vents.

The verdict

For most Indian kirana stores, bakeries, cafés and pharmacies, a visi cooler is the practical choice: lower running cost, steady temperatures in warm shops and no installation work. Open multidecks belong in properly air-conditioned supermarkets where speed of shopping matters more than energy, and even there many retailers now fit doors to multidecks to cut running cost. If you do choose an open deck, budget for its higher electricity use and plan the store layout around its air curtain. A visi cooler in a hot shop still needs space behind or above it for the condenser to breathe, or its running cost rises too.
